Jackson's 1st trip to the dentist

We took Jackson to the dentist for the first time this morning. We had read books and talked about what the dentist might do to get him ready, but still... you never know quite how kids are going to react to new situations. I was actually quite surprised at how well he did! He let the hygenist polish his teeth and look in his mouth--pretty impressive! The things he didn't like was the chair going back, so he chose to sit up, which was fine. He also didn't like "Mr. Thirsty" so he just used a cup to rinse out his mouth, not a big deal! The good news is he doesn't have any cavities and the dentist said he's been doing a good job brushing! (Oh, this is the coolest dentist because they have DVDs for kids to watch while getting their teeth cleaned!)

Waiting in the lobby
Hmmm...not so sure about this thing in my mouth
Watching a DVD is a good way to pass the time while this lady cleans my teeth

Getting those teeth polished so they shine---eyes still on the movie!

All done! Great job, Jackson!!

The week in review

We have had a wonderful week together! I am getting better at managing the boys' schedules and needs and it is getting easier! Wait, did I say easier? I did! I didn't say it was EASY, just a bit easier than the week before. Jonathan is doing really well--he's smiling so much these days and it's super cute. Jackson and Joshua have their moments when they play so well together, and then a few minutes later all chaos can erupt, but hey, they're brothers--it comes with the territory! Friday we spent the day in jammies!! :) It was so nice!! Enjoy the pictures--some are pretty funny!
Big brother Jackson with Jonathan--check out the cheeks on Jonathan! Cute or what?!

Joshua loves hanging out on the steps--he'll just sit and talk and play there for a long time.

Hard at work! Jackson spent quite a long time on Thursday and Friday coloring Curious George pictures.

The boys in their jammies! Yes, Joshua is wearing Jackson's underwear over his jammies!
Our sleeping beauty--Jonathan can sleep through all the noise of Jackson and Joshua's playing--pretty amazing!

Joshua knows his animal sounds! Cute!

Extra special guest blog--Pink Peace!

Thanks to Emma for letting me do a guest blog!! I read Emma’s blog regularly and stand in awe of her strength and resolve as a mom of THREE boys. I have two girls myself – 3 years apart and that is hard enough, I cannot imagine three! My oldest, Makenna, went to “school” with Jackson and Joshua and we have gotten to know the Avery 5 through that. Emma is an amazing woman and I know that her strength and resolve is more than just her. God is a source of strength. God also provides and works when we need something. There are several ladies that have come into my life recently and at a time when I needed new friends….and that’s sort of why I’m “here” today….I wanted to share with you a story…..a story of how God works…in His time…..with an amazing outcome….the story of my mom’s battle with breast cancer. You see, God works. He works in everything.

My name is Heather Freeman….I live in Chicago…oh blah blah blah….let’s get to the good stuff. The following is my mom’s story about her fight with breast cancer and her testimony through it. It is my hope that this will touch someone, maybe someone that has a personal connection with this terrible disease or someone who just needs to be reminded of God’s love and how powerful He truly is regardless of the situation. Here goes…it’s long, but her touching words are worth it……

Nearly 7 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer……and from the moment I found out I knew that I had nothing to fear.

Because of my faith, I know that nothing touches us that God does not allow. Quite simply, if He allows it then He also has a plan. Of course, I didn’t know what that plan was but I know that He knew about this cancer before I was ever even born. For that reason…..from day 1, I asked God to use this for His glory. I knew that if I could trust Christ with my very soul then I could certainly trust him with a mere tumor. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that it was something that I wanted to go through or that I would ever want to go through again….but God pulled me close and gave me a peace that is unexplainable. . . one that took me from the moment we got the diagnosis to the moment I was declared cancer free.

My first surgery was 15 hours because of complications. Then, just two days later I had to go back into surgery. I didn’t understand but I told God that I was just giving it all to Him and trusting Him. He had certainly comforted me before, but this is when He really started to move. My mother was there for that second surgery. See, my husband and I had been praying for my mother for over 35 years….praying for her to come to know Christ as her savior but it was not something she was interested in talking about. For the entire 35 years, we never gave up on praying for her. I had a very deep burden for her salvation and I had asked God several times to use whatever it takes for my mom to come to Him. As my husband was walking me into surgery I asked him to go back to my room while I was in surgery and give my mother the gospel once again and to make it as clear and simple as God made it for us. I can remember being taken back to the recovery room after the surgery and I could hear the nurses in the background saying you can’t come in here yet….and then I could hear my husband’s voice saying “and you can’t stop me.” He walked over to me and kissed me and said “Your mother just trusted Christ as her savior”. I then remember looking at him and saying that it was all worth it. God knew this was the time and I am so grateful to have a husband that loves the Lord so much that during such a difficult time for him he was willing to put his feelings aside and share Christ’s love with my mom….to continue with the effort for which I had had a burden for so very long. My mom went home to be with Jesus the following year. God heard our prayers.

This cancer thing…..it was a difficult time but a time that Christ pulled me so close and taught me so much. He blessed me with so many wonderful friends who provided meals and house cleanings and so many other needs. My family was wonderful…..my husband, son and three daughters. They cared for me with such love and compassion and they did things for me that I never wanted them to have to do but thanked God that they were willing to do whatever it took to get me back to good health. He worked such a work in their lives also and taught them so much about the power of prayer. To this day I am so thankful for everything from them and from God.

When God works, God works big! He didn’t just leave it there….one night during the middle of my chemotherapy treatment days, He woke me up in the middle of the night and I knew that He had something very important that He wanted to tell me. I was so tired and sick but I knew I had to listen. I got up and went to sit on the couch. After a few minutes I picked up my bible and began reading where I had left off earlier. I had been reading through the Gospels during the chemo and left off at John 9. As I began reading, it was a story I had read so many times before but this time it took on a whole new meaning. It was the story of the blind man. “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” I knew that my loving God was waking me up to tell me that my cancer was for his glory. I never have to wonder or ask why because he let me know. Was it for my mom’s salvation or for some other reason? I don’t know. But I do know that God received the glory. I often think what if I had chosen to stay in bed that night and not listen. I would have missed out on such a big piece of this journey.

I will be walking in the Chicago 3Day walk for breast cancer. I am walking to raise money for those that are going through or will be going through this terrible disease. It will be a prayer walk for me. I will be asking God to let me share what He did through my cancer and be able to share his love with the thousands that will be walking with us. I am so excited about walking with my 3 wonderful daughters who have been such an amazing part of my life. I love them more than life itself and am blessed to have them in my life. I also will be walking with one of my dearest friends that God has recently brought back into my life after many years when I needed her friendship. God is so good!

The name of out team is called “Pink Peace”. We want to be able to share the peace that can only come through him even in difficult times. We are walking to Overcome!
John 16:33 says “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Each of our team members needs to raise $2300.00 to be able to walk. We are committed to raising that amount and more if possible – we have set our team goal to $25,000!!! If you would like support us in this journey, even with a dollar, every cent helps fight this disease! If you are unable to contribute financially, please support us in prayer – that God will get the glory and that He will MOVE during this 3-day walk. If you are able to contribute financially, please visit the link to our team page below, where you can make a donation to any team member as we are committed to helping each other out.

Jonathan is one month old!!

Jonathan had his one-month well baby check-up today. He is doing really well! We are thrilled! Any guesses how big he is now?? He was 8 pounds 3 ounces at birth, and now he is.....10 pounds 13 ounces!!! Can you believe it?? He is in the 90th percentile for weight and 75th for length with 22 inches. A month into this parenting three children gig, I'd like you all to know that we're doing really well--busy for sure, but well. There was even a day last week when AW had to work 14 hours, so I was on my own for the whole bedtime routine, and we did great (except I skipped baths that night). I am really loving staying home--it's so nice to spend time with my boys. I feel like I missed out on so much when I was working full time. Hopefully AW's job will allow me to stay home longer--that's in God's hands!
Jonathan's first bottle---took it like a champ!
Working on tummy time--good job, get that head up!
Our little "Cookie Monster" after bath time last night!

American Idol auditions??

Not sure if they're ready for American Idol quite yet, but our boys sure like to sing and dance! Jackson and Joshua had a fun time performing on the stairs yesterday, while Jonathan made a great audience member.

I love Jackson's smile in this picture! We have such cute boys! :)
Can't believe how much Jonathan has changed in just a month--check out those cheeks!!

Five days

The week is almost over--about 7 hours till AW gets home. We seem to have survived, but it wasn't super easy. Jackson and Joshua know that when it is time for Jonathan to eat, I can't get up and discipline or interact as I normally, so that is the time when they act up. It is pretty frustrating for me--I need to figure out how to handle all three of them when they all seem to need me at the same time. Any ideas?? Despite all the difficult moments, I love being at home and I am hoping things will only improve as Jonathan gets older and the boys settle into a routine. Here are some pictures from this week!
Jonathan--four weeks old already!

Superman?? No, it's SuperMOM!

Okay, so I had pretty much resolved myself to the fact that I was going to be housebound for months with my three little guys! The first week we did stay in a lot, with just going outside to play a few times. This week I wanted to try getting out, just to see if I could manage. I love Caribou Coffee (not any coffee, just the hot cocoa and coolers), so we decided to go there and have some mid-afternoon treats! The boys love the hot cocoa with a half-shot of raspberry--Jackson calls it pink coffee! So, I bundled up the boys, got them loaded in the car (not an easy thing to manage with three!!) and we were off! Now, we just went to the drive-thru, so we didn't have to get out and back in the car because I don't think we're ready for that, but still, it counts!! We got out of the house, we went somewhere together, and we didn't have any meltdowns in the process! Success!! Next, we'll tackle going somewhere that involves getting out of the car--maybe in a few weeks. I am convinced that the world is made for families with two kids or fewer, and the thought of having to figure out how to get three kids in a shopping cart and still have room for groceries is just too much for me right now! We'll get there eventually!

Hello 2009!

Happy New Year! Well, 2009 is here! 2008 was pretty good, but we're guessing 2009 will be even better! Here is how we spent the last week of 2008. It was my first week home with the boys and it has gone fairly well. Jackson and Joshua are great with Jonathan--they love to hold him and kiss him and share toys with him. Jonathan seems to be a pretty easy baby so far, but we just have to teach him how to sleep better at night. We need our sleep! (Don't all new parents say that?? It's so true!)

Joshua and Jonathan spending a sweet moment together!
Jackson loves building towers with his blocks--just hates it when Josh knocks them down, which Joshua loves to do!!

Jonathan is very observant and is taking everything in around him!
We ventured out one day this week when it wasn't super cold and the boys loved digging in the snow! Jackson loved shoveling the snow--he threw it all onto the driveway. Fun!
Joshua had a great time with the shovel, but his gloves kept coming off and his little hands were super cold! Poor guy!
Have a blessed 2009! We certainly feel blessed! I am so fortunate to be able to stay home with the boys! My new year's resolution is to enjoy each day that I am home with Jackson, Joshua and Jonathan!
